LIONEL MESSI’s future could see a return to Barcelona after the club’s vice-president dropped a huge hint about his potential return.

Barcelona and Messi parted ways in the summer of 2021 due to the Spanish giants’ crippling financial situation.

Messi then signed a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain, but with that contract expiring next summer, speculation has grown over his future.

SunSport exclusively revealed yesterday that the 35-year-old currently has no concrete options on the table.

But that doesn’t worry him as he is focused on winning World Cup glory in Qatar with Argentina.

However, Barcelona vice-president has hinted that they will make a move to re-sign La Pulga.

In an interview with Catalunya Ràdio’s El Matí, Barca vice-president Eduard Romeu revealed that Messi’s return would be economically viable.

He said: “If I came back it would be free, so I’m sure it would be viable. In any case, it’s a technical and player decision.”

It’s understood that PSG want to keep the star striker by offering him a one-year extension, but they haven’t officially made the offer yet.

Romeu later explained how the structure of the club had changed both on and off the pitch and how that would allow for Messi’s return.

He said: “We completely changed the structure.

“After having players with salary levels outside the market and an already strong squad at middle-age level, we continued to have players with projection and market levels, which will surely be important.

“Without appearing presumptuous, we saved Barça but we are not in good financial health and a lot of austerity and rigor are needed and there is a lot of work to be done.

“Barca will be healthy in five years. In the 2024-25 season, we will be at the level that belongs to us.”

He then revealed that the club had cut £135m from their wage bill.
