ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) – The victim of a mutilated dog usually does not make it out alive, especially when two dogs are involved. But it was thanks to the quick actions of Bladen County law enforcement that Yulonda Lewis survived her vicious encounter.
“We just jumped in there with the EMS staff. We have a great working relationship with EMS. I helped train them in technical care of combat casualties. They all know me [I] know them and we worked well together to save this woman’s life,” said Capt. Daniel Clark of the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.
Captain Clark has six years’ experience as an Army combat medic under his belt, and that came in handy after the attack on Martin Luther King Drive in Elizabethtown on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the police had their hands full and were trying to get the dogs to back away.
“Officers tried to deploy pepper spray; it was ineffective. Once the pepper spray was deployed, the dogs disengaged and turned on the officers,” Capt Clark said.
That’s when one of the pit bulls was shot and killed. The other dog then backed away. As reinforcements arrived, a dog began charging towards this officer, causing him to shoot the dog.
The pit bull was injured and is now being held by Bladen County Animal Services.
Lewis remains in critical condition with a long road to recovery.
However, the future of the dog still remains uncertain.
“They are in the care of animal services, I think they will make that decision. But if it is determined that the owner will not receive them and they are considered violent and a threat to the public, then they will be euthanized,” Captain Clark said.
