Captain America 4 director Julius Onah argues that Sam Wilson, rather than Steve Rogers, should be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new hero. Chris Evans’ Rogers quickly established himself as a mainstay in the MCU after his debut in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Along with two sequels and a number of tag-team movies, the patriotic hero would later make appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, when Evans gave his shield to Wilson (Anthony Mackie). With his own standalone movie on the horizon, Wilson will later dig deeper into whether he really wanted to be the new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Julius Onah is directing the film
Captain America 4 has Onah as the director. He previously oversaw The Cloverfield Paradox for Netflix. With Disney’s D23 Expo 2022 recently declaring that Tim Blake Nelson is returning from the lead role of The Incredible Hulk to play the role of the film’s villain, the upcoming Captain America movie will debut in May 2024 as part of Phase 5 of the MCU. Despite Wilson being a generally beloved character in the MCU, a significant portion of fans are still wary of anyone succeeding Evans as the famous superhero, and a smaller portion of fans have issues with Captain America being a black person.
Onah defended Wilson as the new Captain America in an interview with CinemaBlend at D23, adding that critics should watch the film before passing judgment. He also touches on the fact that, at his heart, Captain America is an advocate for diversity and upholding moral principles, so in keeping with that, fans should come together to celebrate this new MCU chapter in honor of the character. “First of all, wait until you see this movie. But secondly, you know, I think for anyone wondering why someone like Anthony Mackie or Sam Wilson should be at the center of it all, it comes down to what Captain America. It’s so beautiful to have a character who stands up for what’s right and to think of a world that everyone can be a part of. There’s no denying that it’s right. That’s exactly what is Captain America. So there’s really nothing to spoil, there’s only things to celebrate, and all of these people should feel welcome to celebrate that.

Captain America 4 is dividing fans. Onah’s remarks follow an examination of Wilson’s issues in the MCU universe in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Wilson’s quest to become Captain America takes place in a world where racism exists, and due to his color, the struggles he faces as a hero are unique and more difficult. It’s obvious Onah thinks MCU viewers should give Wilson a shot as the new Captain America, judging the hero by the innate goodness and strength within him rather than the color of his skin. This is also true in real life.
Captain America 4 is already shaping up to be an intriguing departure from what came before, but it’s still unclear how it will compare to previous Captain America films. Although many people loved Evans’ turn as a hero, Phases 4 and 5 of the MCU are a time of significant change as new heroes emerge to take on different kinds of challenges. Wilson may already be well known to fans as Falcon, but Captain America: New World Order will likely deepen the character and ultimately establish Wilson as the new Star Spangled Man.
