Spoilers ahead for Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #3
In the latest issue of Marvel Comics Captain America: Sentinel of Freedom, Steve Rogers reveals one of the coolest shield abilities ever. While some Marvel characters like the MCU’s Ultron warned about the creation of Captain America’s vibranium shield and saw it as nothing more than a glorified Frisbee, the comics prove it’s much more than that. Thanks to its unique composition, Rogers’ classic shield is incredibly versatile, as seen in this new issue.
In previous issues of Sentinel of Liberty from writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly with works by Carmen Carnero, Steve Rogers discovered the leading shadowy conspiracy group known as the Outer Circle. Learning that they had some sort of role in the creation of his shield, Captain America was shocked to discover that his shield is a symbol of their dark work known as the Century Game, having pawns in every major organization that he never fought and/or worked. with like Hydra and SHIELD.
Now Captain America faces off against the mysterious vibranium-covered agent of the Outer Circle known as The Redacted in the new Sentinel of Liberty #3, tasked with removing Rogers from the board by any means necessary. Clashes at an experimental German power plant, Steve forces the retreat of the Redacted before unlocking a secret message carved into the shield itself (left to Captain America by the shield’s creator). Following the message, one of the leaders of the Outer Circle, known as the Machine, detonates the power plant, hoping to terminate the super-soldier on the spot. However, Captain America is able to use his shield to effectively surf the molten river below and survive the explosion.
Not only did Captain America surf lava with his shield in this issue, but he also got to feel the rising power beneath him during his battle with The Redacted through the vibrations of his shield, using electricity to brutally shock his enemy. Obviously, Cap’s shield can do a lot more than deflect bullets. As such, it’s always fun when Marvel creatives find new ways to make Rogers’ primary weapon of choice even more useful (and super cool).
While Captain America’s shield bears dark symbolism representing the outer circle that rules, the two inner circles that obey, and the star representing the super-soldier who’s supposed to be their greatest pawn, the creator always hoped Rogers would resist. to this role. and make the shield its own symbol. Now that Captain America knows the truth, I hope he can really get his shield back and what it’s supposed to represent. Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #3 is on sale now.
