Steve Rogers learns that his new enemies have ties to others – and even allies – from his past in Captain America: Sentinel of Freedom.

The Rogers-focused single-player series introduced a new conspiracy to the Marvel Universe that revolves around the hero’s mighty shield and who’s really behind it. At the end of the title’s first issue, Steve is told that “the shield is not what [he] think, “that’s not his symbol but someone else’s. At a preview for Captain America: Sentinel of Freedom #2, as Cap begins to delve into the new mystery and deal with a hostage situation, he discovers the plot runs through multiple Marvel groups, including Hydra, the Hand, AIM, and SHIELD

In the preview, the Cap combat soldiers who are part of the plot come from the various organizations, namely Steve notices a Hydra tattoo, hand combat techniques, AIM technology and a former SHIELD agent wielding a knife with the agency logo. Most Marvel Comics and Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are familiar with Hydra and SHIELD, the former bringing a criminal organization tied to Nazi Germany and the latter being an agency that fights alongside heroes to defend Earth. As for the other two, the Hand is a ninja criminal organization that is a recurring enemy of Daredevil (and currently led by the Punisher) while AIM is made up of scientists who strive to increase their power over the world.

Co-writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing spoke with CBR ahead of the title’s release and teased what readers will see of this conspiracy on the show. “These string-pulling villains have their own personalities and motivations, and they command a force unlike any Captain America has ever seen,” Kelly said. “That includes Lieutenants, Generals, and the Powerful. They are essential players in the history of the Marvel Universe, in American history, and in world history for the past hundred years.”

The plot involved also extends to Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier, who is one of the main characters working alongside Steve in Sentinel of Liberty. Bucky teaches Lanzing and Kelly Devil’s Reign: Winter Soldier #1 that the Winter Soldier program he was a part of was just a small facet of a much larger organization that plans to control him for his entire life. Lanzing warned readers during the aforementioned interview that delving into Bucky’s journey “is going to be a very painful door to open” and that he suppose “it’s going to hurt to read.”

Captain America: Sentinel of Freedom #2 is written by Lanzing and Kelly with art by Carmen Carnero, ink by VC’s Joe Caramagna, and color by Nolan Woodard. The issue’s main cover is by Carnero and Alejandro Sánchez, with variant covers contributed by Iban Coella, Matt Milla and Peach Momoko. The issue goes on sale July 6 from Marvel Comics.
