Visionary demon wars Creator Peach Momokoit is justice shield cover featuring Captain America Beautifully reimagines the Star-Spangled Avenger armor in a classic Japanese design. Traditional Japanese folklore combined with Marvel heroes might not be a typical couple, but this cover features a surprisingly perfect blend of both styles.
Captain America is one of the oldest and most recognizable superhero characters in comic book history. The patriotic super soldier has entertained and inspired generations of fans since the 1940s and remains one of the greatest in Marvel’s pantheon. Many might even say he’s the face of Marvel as a whole for TV, movies, and comics along with Tony Stark’s Iron Man. This international recognition has allowed many creators to invent new variations of Captain America with many iconic results. Although the captain’s abilities have been constantly evolving, the armor has generally remained constant.
The Demon Wars: Shield of Justice Peach Momoko’s cover art sees Cap in traditional samurai armor complete with a monto samurai cape and face shield. The biggest change to the suit is, of course, the armor. The American flag patterns have been replaced with blue, white, and red circles on his monto samurai cape that pay homage to Steve’s shield and possibly take influence from the Japanese flag as well. Captain America’s new look also comes with a slightly menacing and demonic oni face on the helmet, a unique take on his classic helmet that could potentially serve as a parallel to the old winged helmet design. The only thing missing is Cap’s signature shield, but given the Japanese influence, you could argue it’s not needed since Captain America is literally a shield of justice.
This particular piece was created for the next issue of the series, which is a retelling of the Civil war story set in an alternate dimension featuring Japanese folklore from the Edo period. Civil war isn’t the only time Captain America has been forced to choose sides, but it’s the most iconic and allows for the most creative freedom. The Edo period was a time of great samurai warriors and Momoko’s works certainly capture that feeling. Steve Rogers’ classic blonde hair and blue eyes have been replaced with traditional long black hair and grey-black eyes to convey the authenticity of this universe created by Momoko. It’s not hard to imagine Cap fitting in perfectly during this time, especially with this reimagined armor.
This isn’t the first time Momoko has put her own spin on Marvel characters. The artist is known for her reinterpretations of well-known heroes and villains, often with a unique twist. His work often features traditional Japanese influences and Demon Wars: Shield of Justice is no different. The series as a whole has a very distinct look that sets it apart from other unique releases from Marvel properties. The Avengers are Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and are more than suited to the classic Japanese reworking of their most famous conflict. The demon wars series by Peach Momoko promises to be a must-read for all fans of Captain America looking for a new version of the most famous Avenger.
