WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Captain Carter #3, available now from Marvel.
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, there were many creative and exciting fight sequences. For example, one scene featured a brainwashed Bucky Barnes using guns, knives, and bombs against Steve Rogers, Falcon, and Black Widow in the middle of a busy freeway. However, Captain America’s fight against Hydra’s double agents in the tight confines of an elevator was the most memorable sequence.
Steve’s inventive and masterful use of hand-to-hand combat was what made this particular scene special. The movie depicted his super soldier strength and demonstrated that he didn’t need his signature shield to defeat Crossbones and company. In Captain Carter #3 (by Jamie McKelvie, Marika Cresta, Clayton Cowles and Matt Milla), the titular hero details his story after his Marvel Puzzle Quest and Exiles origin. But more importantly, the issue remixes the classic MCU fight scene, hinting that it has much more in common with Captain America: The Winter Soldier than it initially appears.
The second issue already had Peggy crushing the Batroc crew near the docks, nodding to the film. However, rather than discovering weapons like in the film, she unearthed a political fiasco involving Britain mistreating refugees. This led to the sinister Prime Minister Williams taking on a role akin to Robert Redford’s villainous Alexander Pierce in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In the third issue, Williams released a hit in his version of SHIELD, called STRIKE, which mimicked what happened to Chris Evans’ cap. Peggy’s mutant colleague, Lizzie Braddock, was accosted by assassins, and after they failed to silence her, Peggy’s crew discovered the truth about the base of the villains’ weapons with her insignia. STRIKE. This led to Peggy being ambushed at work.
While the MCU’s Steve was alert, noticing how sweaty and nervous his attackers were, Peggy noticed bruised agents (apparently the ones going after Lizzie) and agents with weapons already drawn. Within seconds, she engaged her attackers, throwing her shield and using her super strength, speed and power to defeat them all – which was an impressive display of her skill considering the number of opponents. Peggy finally hopped up to the first floor to pay homage to what the MCU’s Cap did in her elevator escape. Likewise, she was now an enemy of the state, with Williams angered.
As for its role, it may well be that because STRIKE was formed out of SHIELD, just like in the MCU, Hydra agents remained embedded within, wreaking havoc and trying to keep the country under their control. In that sense, with Williams most likely a Hydra agent, Peggy will face an even tougher fight than Steve. This is because having an organization after you is manageable, but an entire nation is a much different and much more dangerous story. Fortunately, Peggy has telekinesis Lizzie and a hacker at her neighbor’s house, Harley, to help her.
