CARY, NC — The North Carolina Courage announced today that the club has re-signed captain and defenseman Abby Erceg to a two-year contract with an option for a third year in 2024.
“Abby’s re-signing is very well deserved and great for our club,” said head coach Sean Nahas. “She was a fixture for us and someone who has always held the standards of what it takes to be a Courage player. As a club we wanted to make sure we could have her here for the long term. to continue to build on the foundation. she has already helped to create. I couldn’t be more excited to continue working with her and to involve her in something bigger moving forward.
The Whangārei, New Zealand native has started 133 of the 136 games she has appeared in during her NWSL career, and has registered eight goals and five assists during that span. This season, Erceg have scored one goal in eight matches played and have an 85% success rate.
Erceg joined the franchise in 2016 as part of the Western New York Flash, where she helped the team win the 2016 NWSL Championship. The 32-year-old then moved to North Carolina with the Courage and has been captain since. , winning back-to-back titles with Courage in 2018 and 2019, three NWSL Shields, the 2018 ICC Women’s Championship, and most recently, the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup Championship. Erceg was named the 2018 NWSL Defender of the Year and is part of of the 2018 NWSL Best XI.
Internationally, Erceg has represented New Zealand at four Olympic Games (Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020) and four Women’s World Cups (China 2007, Germany 2011, Canada 2015, France 2019) .
