August 1, 2022 – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) – Houston Dash Press Release

On Sunday July 31, as the Houston Dash prepared to face NJ/NY Gotham FC on the road, captain Rachel Daly entered Wembley Stadium with a record crowd of 87,192. She and the Lionesses were about to make history.

The striker spent her summer in her native England to participate in the Women’s Euro 2022 with the Lionesses. Captain Dash has taken the continent by storm at left-back and started every game for the Lionesses in the tournament. She was loaded with important minutes for the Lionesses and did her part to ensure England saw each other in the final.

Daly once again found herself starting at left-back in Sunday’s final. The game against Germany did not disappoint – the game was a two-way game with England and Germany trading chances and saves.

England broke through in the 62nd minute, when striker Ella Toone sent the crowd into a frenzy after hitting the keeper for the opening goal. Germany weren’t ready to back down, however, and midfielder Lina Magull got past the England keeper to force the game into extra time.

The decisive goal came in the 100th minute when Chloe Kelly flicked the ball past the German keeper and sealed England’s fate as champions.

In front of almost 90,000 fans at Wembley and a record audience of over 17 million viewers worldwide, England finally brought football home.

“We won the Euros at Wembley? Can you believe it? I can, because I never doubted this team,” Daly told BBC Sport after the game. “I was a nervous wreck the whole time at the end. When on the pitch you don’t feel it, but I was so nervous. This place just erupted. Thank you so much everyone.”

Daly recently reached 100 caps for Dash and 50 caps for England, continuing to impress within the NWSL and around the world.
