Dhoni ‘to remain captain of CSK, no decision on Jadeja

There has been speculation that the MS Dhoni will hand over the captaincy reins to Ravindra Jadeja. But according to CSK officials, no transition is underway at the moment. MS Dhoni said during the IPL 2021 title celebration that they would like to play their last IPL match at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. But as that is unlikely to happen this season due to the Covid-19 pandemic with BCCI planning to hold IPL 2022 in Mumbai and Pune, MS Dhoni is unwilling to commit to taking a call this season.

“There were no discussions about it. We will cross the bridge when the time comes. Dhoni is our captain. He is the first player for CSK and when he decides to retire he will make that call. We will let’s focus now on the auction,” a CSK source told InsideSport.IN.

MS Dhoni is currently in Chennai preparing for the IPL 2022 auction and a discussion on the captaincy transition is expected to take place over the next 15 days. However, the last call will be Thala Dhoni. Despite his non-performance as a batsman, he remains a fan favorite for his goalkeeper and captaincy skills, not to mention he led CSK to the 4th IPL title after a disastrous show in 2020.

“You see, you are talking about Dhoni, who gave example after example. He left the first detention place for Jadeja and was one of the first to arrive at the CSK camp each time. He’s in good shape, led the team to another title. Why would he retire mid-season? All these discussions will take place at the right time. Right now he is focusing on auctions,” the source close to the development told InsideSport.IN.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni is currently in Chennai planning the IPL 2022 auction and will stay there for a fortnight. He should be present at the auction which is to take place in Bangalore.

Ahead of the mega auction, MS Dhoni took a huge pay cut while elevating Ravindra Jadeja as the team’s first choice for Rs 16 Crore. CSK also retained Moeen Ali for Rs 8 Crore and Ruturaj Gaikwad for Rs 6 Crore. The defending champions will now aim to reclaim their trusted associates like Faf du Plessis and Suresh Raina. But the franchises declined to comment on that.
