Former Europa FC captain and goalkeeper Javi Munoz, who led the club to a historic league and cup double and was later to become their player/goalkeeper coach, has left the club. This has been confirmed by the former player/coach who now describes himself as a free agent and hopes to stay in Gibraltar football.
The former player/coach, without wanting to go into details, explained that his departure came after the end of his contract and “no agreement” was found. Indicating that he had planned to stay at the club longer initially. He described it as a “surprise” that his departure had not yet been announced by the club after the years of service he had provided.
Munoz’s departure reportedly came at the same time as Europa entered a surprise phase of changes which saw Rafa Escobar leave the club and replaced by Moisés García Fernández ‘Arteaga’. The same week, Europa also announced their new technical director, Juan Carlos Capote Gómez, previously from UD San Pedro, Alcalá Atlético and having played for numerous clubs, including Algeciras CF.
Gomez replaces David Thompson, the former Liverpool player who took over as sporting technical director last summer. His departure, similarly to the departure of Munoz was given a low profile. The former Liverpool player is said to have left the club earlier this year alongside Eddie Yome who also stepped down as CEO after taking over last summer when he moved into management after being himself technical director.
The dramatic changes at Europa come at a time when the club reportedly already slashed players’ wages by around 30% last summer as they tightened their budgets. With the club now looking certain to miss out on their chance to play in the Champions League again, facing the prospect of being knocked out if the Lincoln Red Imps claim two more wins in their last four matches, Europa are also faces the prospect of having to owe its stakes in order to stop what some expect will be the migration of some of its key players to other clubs in the domestic league.
Recent changes at the club have seen a number of key players already reported to have entered into talks with rival clubs with at least two players believed to have agreed pre-signing deals as rival clubs target players.
Europa had under Rafa Escobar continued their policy which led to their maiden title of trying to keep at least 70% of their squad intact from season to season.
With the club now facing changes at the top and rival clubs targeting players this summer, the club face the prospect of having to move away from such a policy as the new head coach assembles his squad for the competition. of European clubs and next season’s campaign.
Europa will be looking to play in the Europa Conference League needing just one point to fully secure their place in the top three.
