Fernandinho offers advice to next Manchester City captain after revealing concerns
Fernandinho gave advice to the next Manchester Captained City to continue the club’s success after his departure.
The Brazilian midfielder has been in charge of the Etihad for the past two seasons, succeeding David Silva in 2020 and overseeing two Premier League titles to add to his many accolades from his nine years as a City player .
However, in February this year, the 37-year-old concluded he had to leave if he wanted to play for at least two more years.
It is an honor for the club’s service that even when deciding his own future, he thought about what awaited him at City, telling teammates Ederson and Kayky over a meal at his home: “Something else worries me. I won’t say I’m losing sleep over this, but one thing that worries me a lot is the question of grooming the next captain for you.
Fernandinho wouldn’t say who will be in front of the cameras filming a documentary about his final months at City, but he will give advice to whoever takes the armband back from him at the end.
“This is my diary to the future captain of Manchester City,” he begins. A record of what I learned, what I wish I had known before.
“You will have your own characteristics. Every captain is different. Each person is different. But some things are universal.
“You will learn when to speak, when to be quiet, when to demand more, when to show your support, when to hug and when to tell them. Pushing your teammates to the highest level. That’s the biggest challenge as a captain. This experience comes with time.
“The most important thing is to be together, especially in difficult times. Good luck, I’ll watch!”
With Fernandinho’s departure, the next oldest member of the squad is Raheem Sterling, who is set to join Chelsea this summer.
Kevin De Bruyne is the second most experienced player, while Ilkay Gundogan and Ruben Dias were both ahead of him in last season’s five-man squad.
