Leo Lloyd had a long career in emergency medical and rescue services

Medical and Rescue Flight Services honored Leo Lloyd III with a midday flyby Tuesday in Durango.

The flyover went south to north, making an “S” shaped pass over Durango.

Leo Lloyd, a Durango resident since 1980 and a longtime emergency medicine practitioner, died Aug. 4 from heart problems, his brother, Joe Lloyd, said. He has served as an EMT, Paramedic, Flight Medic, and EMS Captain with the Durango Fire Protection District, as well as an International Technical Rescue Instructor. (Durango Herald file)

Lloyd, 60, a former EMS captain with DFPD, died on August 4 of heart complications while on a bike ride with one of his sons in the Twin Buttes area.

Lloyd has had a long career in emergency medical and rescue services. In addition to his 20 years with DFPD, he has served as a medic/paramedic with San Juan Regional Air Care, as well as hundreds of search and rescue missions in La Plata County and San Juan, often with air support, according to a press release. press release from the DFPD.

“A big part of Leo’s career has involved flight services and flying,” said Scott Sholes, emergency medical services chief for the Durango Fire Protection District. “Not only did he perform all of these missions, but he also helped train flight medical personnel, including Air Force pararescue teams, to operate safely in austere environments. It is only fitting that they pay tribute to him and his contributions with this coordinated overview.

Participating flight services in the flyover included Flight for Life Colorado, San Juan Regional Air Care, Care Flight, Classic Air and Colorado Highland Helicopters.
