Former Arsenal captain Gilberto Silva has said missing out on the Champions League was “not acceptable”, but believes a transfer of Gabriel Jesus would suit both sides.

Former Arsenal captain Gilberto Silva has revealed that a move for Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus would be a great deal for Arsenal and the player.

Jesus is entering the final 12 months of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and has been linked with a move to Arsenal, following City’s recent acquisitions of Erling Haaland and Argentina striker Julian Alvarez.

Both Real Madrid and Chelsea have expressed interest in the 25-year-old, but Gilberto would like to see his compatriot move to north London.

When asked if Arsenal would be a good choice for him, Gilberto told talkSPORT: “If he goes to Arsenal, I think it will be a good move for him, also for Arsenal.”

Gilberto spent six years at Arsenal between 2002 and 2008 and was part of the club’s famous ‘invincibles’ team which went unbeaten throughout the 2003/04 league season.

But seeing his former club slip below the standards set by Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires has left the 45-year-old disappointed with the Gunners’ fate.

“Do you know what is frustrating for all Arsenal fans? I think for me it was, they missed the opportunity to be in the Champions League after a few years – four or five years if I’m not mistaken? “, did he declare.

“Let’s see, I think Arsenal need to get back to the top of the league during the main competition because it’s been so hard to see Arsenal in recent years not playing in the Champions League and not fighting for the title.

“I know compared to Man City and Liverpool they are not on the same level. Arsenal have to work hard and work well to get back to the good times and start sorting things out and competing for the title.

Gilberto also pointed to a lack of a ‘winning mentality’ and feels he was lost when Arsene Wenger quit as manager.

“During a transition sometimes you also lose the mentality. I think that’s what’s hard because they had the winning mentality and at some point it seems like you lose that,” he added.

“As we lost points, you have to have people who can work with the players and put them in the right frame of mind, in the right way of thinking.

“Listen, we’re at one of the best clubs in the world, it’s not okay for us to do what we’re doing. It’s time for us to do what’s right and do it with the right mentality in depending on the needs of the club.
