Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has thrown his support behind Rishabh Pant after the team’s five-wicket loss to Mumbai Indians on Saturday (May 21st). It was indeed a heartbreaking loss for DC, as a victory by any margin would have propelled them to the IPL 2022 playoffs. Moreover, MI endured an abysmal campaign this season and were the last team in the points standings.

With these many odds in their favor, the Capitals looked favorites to clinch this game. However, it wasn’t their day as MI ended their campaign on a high. Meanwhile, DC has no one to blame but himself as some misjudgment and pitch errors cost them the game. Pant had dropped the in-form Dewald Brevis and the young South African did even more damage.

Another big mistake DC made was not rating Tim David. The shooter had edged the ball to Pant early in his innings, but neither the referee nor the wicketkeeper were able to identify the dismissal. David made the Capitals pay by breaking an 11-ball 34 to seal the game for his team. Needless to mention, these mistakes brought Pant a lot of criticism and his leadership credentials were also called into question.

Rishabh Pant certainly has my full support: Ricky Ponting

Ponting, however, believes the wicketkeeper is the right man to lead the Delhi-based side. “Absolutely, there is no doubt in my mind that Rishabh even last season was the right choice for captain. Rishabh did a wonderful job with the team after taking over from Shreyas (Iyer) after he got injured shoulders,” Ponting said at the press conference after DC lost by five wickets to MI.

“He’s just a young man and still learning to captain. Captaining a T20 team, especially in IPL which is a high pressure tournament, is not an easy thing to do and unfortunately ,everything you do will be scrutinized. He definitely got my full support.
