By India Today Web Desk: South African captain Temba Bavuma was rested from the 2nd ODI between India and South Africa. Played at Ranchi on Sunday 9 October, the game is crucial for South Africa to take a clear lead in the three-game series. However, during the draw, it looked like they would have to do so without the services of their captain as deputy Keshav Maharaj came out for the draw alongside Shikhar Dhawan and informed that Bavuma and Tabraiz Shamsi will not would not be part of the game.

Asked about the reason for the call, Maharaj said both players weren’t feeling well after waking up in the morning and in their place Reeza Hendricks and Bjorn Fortuin were added respectively.

“We’re going to have a bat, it looks like a good wicket. Shamsi and Temba didn’t wake up very well this morning, so Reeza Hendricks and Bjorn Fortuin come and get them. Hopefully we can try to use the conditions, assess him from the start and play him from there,” the substitute captain said.

South Africa won the toss that day and elected to strike first. The team edged Dhawan’s India by 9 points in the first ODI match. Despite Sanju Samson’s heroics, SA kept their composure in the rain-shortened final to claim a 9-point win. Heinrich Klassen was voted man of the match for his 74 from 65 balls and said the cornering conditions were not at all conducive to hitting.

India, meanwhile, made two changes to its membership. Washington Sundar returned to the ODI fray after start-stop injury problems that plagued him for much of the year, and Shabaz Ahmed was given the India cap and made his ODI debut .
