File photos The 18th All Valley Softball Team is led by, left to right, Julianna King of Steubenville, Maddie McKay of Oak Glen and Kadence Pettit of John Marshall. All three have impacted their teams both from inside the circle and at home plate. McKay and Pettit repeat as captains of last year’s All-Valley team.

Julianna King

P, Steubenville

Captain

King recovered from a thumb injury a year ago to have one of the best all-around seasons in the Valley.

The junior Big Red batted .468 at home plate and was a threat on base runs, racking up 26 interceptions and scoring 29 runs. Her work on the flat alone would command the consideration of the whole valley, but what she did in the circle is what sets her apart.

King amassed a 14-3 pitching record while carrying a paltry 1.24 ERA and knocking out the opposition 202 times.

Maddie McKay

P, Oak Glen

Captain

McKay repeats as All-Valley Team captain, after a stellar 2021 season with an arguably better performance this year.

Toledo’s commitment brought the Golden Bears back to the West Virginia State tournament with a perfect 17-0 record in the circle and a miniscule 1.19 ERA.

She was also a main cog in OG’s mighty offense, batting .474 and racking up an astonishing 43 RBIs.

She was named first-team All-State and co-OVAC Class 4A Player of the Year.

Kadence Pettit

P, John Marshall

Captain

Like McKay, Pettit is repeating as an All-Valley captain while somehow improving on what she was able to do a season ago.

Pettit led the Valley with just a 0.96 ERA while knocking out the opposition 232 times in 159 innings.

She helped the Monarchs be runners-up in the WVSSAC AAA class while also being named first-team All-State and All-OVAC.

No slouch at the plate, Pettit hit .359 with eight doubles, three home runs and 18 RBIs.

Madison Angus

P, weir

Angus has done a lot for the Red Riders in 2022 and she’s done just about everything well.

In the circle, Angus was 19-9 with a 2.51 ERA and 183 strikeouts.

On the flat, she hit .422 while hitting seven home runs and eight doubles with 32 RBIs.

She was named first-team All-OVAC and second-team all-state.

Josie Frizzell

P, central wheel

This freshman burst onto the Maroon Knights scene with a great performance in the circle.

En route to being named first-team states, Frizzell had a 1.27 ERA while striking out 130 batters in 99 innings. She carried a record of 13-4.

She also hit a .409 clip with 10 doubles, helping Central win a sectional championship.

Audrey Dennis

C, Consolidated Tyler

Dennis has proven to be a reliable safety net for the Silver Knights this season.

The elder was solid with bat and glove, batting for a .448 batting average and carrying a 95% right field percentage.

She also hit three homers, eight doubles and a triple while racking up 21 RBIs.

Taylor Bell

FNI, Martins Ferry

Martins Ferry softball has had another stellar season in 2022 and Bell has been a big part of that.

The junior has come out on top this season, hitting .508 with three home runs and 30 RBIs.

The third baseman also scored 25 times while recording a .573 on-base percentage and .769 hitting percentage.

She was named first-team All-OVAC after the season.

Ava Blake

INF, John Marshall

One of the best power hitters in the Valley this season was just a sophomore.

JM’s starting shortstop, Blake scored seven long runs in an All-State First-Team campaign.

She batted .448 with 18 total extra hits, 32 RBIs and 36 runs.

Three of Blake’s outbursts were Grand Slams, including two in the same game.

Gentry Brown

INF, shaded side

Shortstop/third baseman, this junior provided plenty of hits on the Tigers lineup for coach Robert Gorrell.

Brown hit .441 while going eight over the fence while scoring 34 RBIs.

For her efforts, Brown was named Division IV All-Eastern District first team, All-OVAC first team, and All-MOVL after the season.

Sidney Brown

INF, Oak Glen

One of many dangerous hitters on the powerhouse Oak Glen roster, this infield midfielder was a key contributor to OG State’s tournament team.

Brown hit .458 with half a dozen home runs and 22 RBIs. She was busy on goal as she came on to score 43 times.

She was named first-team All-OVAC and second-team all-state.

Gia Recrosio

INF, Linsley

This shortstop led the Cadets in several offensive categories, including batting average, on-base percentage, hits and runs.

His .558 batting average was one of the best in the Valley and his .612 OPB also stood out.

His season culminated with first-team All-OVAC honors.

Hannah Thoburn

INF, St. Clairsville

The Red Devils’ top hitter had an outstanding cap for her high school career.

She hit a robust .588 with 40 hits and more doubles (16) than singles (13). She also hit eight homers and cashed in three triples.

In addition to 33 RBI and 32 runs scored, Thoburn also struck out just twice all season.

Sarah Touville

INF, Harrison Central

A senior star for the Huskies, Touville earned Division III second-team All-State honors for his efforts this season.

She hit .440 while hitting .655 and recording an on-base mark of .478.

What stands out from the stat sheet, however, is his impressive 48 points.

She was named first-team All-OVAC.

Kenna Calahan

DE, Oak Glen

Yet another big stick in the Golden Bears roster, Calahan joined McKay as an all-state first-team selection.

She provided a mix of power and speed, hitting eight balls over the fence and stealing 18 sacks. Calahan hit .456 with 30 RBIs and scored 48 runs, the most in the Valley.

She was also named a first-team All-OVAC.

Alexa Williams

DE, Buckeye Local

Williams had speed to burn this season, leading the Valley with nine triples.

Those nine, along with six doubles and a homer, gave him 16 more hits to go along with his .500 batting average.

She also hit 29 runs and scored 21.

She earned Division II All-Eastern District, All-OVAC, and All-MOVL honors.

Landry Os

UTL, Brooke

A force for the Bruins this season, Bone doubled as a pitcher and first baseman for coach Jim DiCarlo.

Bone hit .484 with nine long balls this season and went 5-2 in the circle.

She drove in 32 runs and scored 13 of her own.

After the season, Bone was named first-team All-OVAC and second-team all-state.

Maria Clark

UTL, Martin’s Ferry

This senior did just about everything for the Purple Riders in her final season.

In 21 games, Clark recorded 38 hits, including three homers. She led in 34 runs and scored 27 while batting .487 and hitting .782 with a base mark of .529.

She was named OVAC Class 3A Player of the Year for her efforts.

Carley Penner

UTL, Indian Creek

If you throw a softball anywhere near that senior, chances are it will hit it.

This Kent State commitment has hit an astronomical .663 this season with a .701 on-base percentage.

Getting to base was one thing, but she also stole 48 sacks and scored 37 times.

Oh yes, she also posted a 2.18 ERA and an 11-6 record as a pitcher.
