Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer raised his eyebrows when he revealed that franchise CEO Venky Mysore was also part of the team selection process when he tried to explain the five changes that they had brought in their IPL 2022 match against Mumbai Indians earlier. The comments created controversy with former India allrounder Madan Lal expressing his “shock” at the revelations.

On Saturday however, a smiling Iyer broached the matter just as his post-match chat, after an emphatic victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad, was about to end. He said the comments were made in the context of the CEO consoling players who end up being benched for various reasons.
“I also want to clarify the last interview. When I took the name of the CEO, I meant that he is there to console the players who have been absent. It’s also difficult for us when we select the team,” Iyer explained.

Meanwhile, KKR kept their playoff hopes alive with another impressive victory. Andre Russell played for the franchise as he hit a quickfire 49 not out and then took three wickets in a clinical win.
“The mindset we developed in that game was just outstanding. All the boys did the right things, they played cricket without fear. It was really important to win the draw,” said Iyer said of the performance.
He continued: “Everything went very well. We were going all the way. The plan was to give Russell the strike as much as possible. We knew there was one left in Washi, that was the one we were going to go for. Sam was also providing that support. It worked pretty well, hopefully it will work for us in the last game as well.”
The win lifted KKR to sixth place in the standings and they have just one game left. The two-time winners can take their total to a maximum of 14 points and hope that few results will also go in their favor.
“We have nothing to lose at the moment. We haven’t played our A game so far in the league, that’s what I talked about today before the game started,” Iyer said.
