Cristiano Ronaldo wants to succeed Harry Maguire as Manchester United captain, according to The Mirror.
The Englishman has struggled for form this season and been guilty of the club’s poor defensive record. The Portuguese wants to take over as captain for the rest of the season to ease the pressure on the beleaguered Maguire.
Interim manager Ralf Rangnick is said to have had conversations with the 37-year-old and the Englishman over a possible captaincy change mid-season. However, Maguire is skeptical about giving up the club captaincy as he fears losing it for good.
However, Maguire has failed to justify his sky-high price tag since joining Old Trafford in 2019.
The 28-year-old has struggled for consistency and has been particularly poor this season. Rangnick is eager to help him regain his form by relieving him of the pressure of being a club captain. However, Maguire isn’t keen on the idea of Ronaldo taking the armband. The Portuguese has already grown up in the Red Devils dressing room since his arrival last summer.
The 37-year-old was asked to mentor the club’s youngsters and Maguire found his influence in the dressing room waning. There is now a perception at the club that Ronaldo would eventually replace the Englishman as club captain. Mauricio Pochettino perfect for the Red Devils, says Teddy Sheringham
Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has backed PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino to succeed at Old Trafford. The Argentine is the hot seat favorite at United, with a date likely to come in the summer.
Speaking to Genting Casino, Sheringham said Pochettino would be ‘perfect’ for the Red Devils.
“Manchester United have always been brought up in that vibe of playing against the opposition. I think if you look that way I’d say the perfect fit would be Pochettino, no doubt. I think when he was at Tottenham; he wanted the ball, he wanted to play with the ball and hurt the opposition, and I think the Manchester United public would like his philosophy in the way he brings the game to the opposition,” Sheringham said.
“Obviously he hasn’t won anything at Tottenham but if you have bigger and better players who knows what he could achieve. He would be the man for me; he would be the number one choice. C It’s a great experience for him,” added Sheringham.
