Through the new Disney+ Ms. Marvel series, Marvel Studios is revealing a big way Captain America won the MCU’s Civil War against Iron Man.
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Ms. Marvel.
Captain America (Chris Evans) won Captain America: Civil War in a big way as revealed in Ms. Marvel. It’s been six years since directors Joe and Anthony Russo pitted Captain America against Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in the 2016 film. to defeat Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Endgamethe argument of who really won in Captain America: Civil War keep on going.
The initial conflict of Captain America: Civil War was about the differing opinions of Steve Rogers and Tony Starks regarding the Sokovia Accords – a mandate that requires all superhero activities to be monitored by the UN. Captain America turned it down, while Iron Man was open to the idea. As the film progressed, their problem became personal, becoming Bucky’s (Sebastian Stan) involvement in the Starks’ deaths. In the end, there really was no definitive winner in Captain America: Civil Warbut Marvel Studios suggests that the public has chosen a side regarding what is known about the Avengers dispute.
In the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) attends the first-ever AvengerCon. Since the show is set a few years after Avengers: Endgame, there are references to many of the heroes who fought Thanos. That being said, when it comes to original Avengers lineup, Captain America dominates the convention with only a handful of Iron Man merchandise and homages in Ms. Marvelis the AvengerCon. This suggests that in the public eye, Steve’s decision to resist the Sokovia Accords is the right decision despite the government labeling him a fugitive along with the rest of Team Cap for two years after the events of Captain America: Civil War. In the end, the Star-Spangled Avenger’s fight against the government and Iron Man didn’t taint his hero image.
Looking back Captain America: Civil War, it is difficult to choose a side. Steve and Tony’s choices regarding the Sokovia Accords were shaped by their respective experiences. It should be noted, however, that it’s currently unknown if the MCU audience is fully aware of the Avengers’ deeper conflict regarding Bucky. After their intense battle in Siberia, the question never came up, which is understandable considering the Avengers had more pressing issues to deal with given Thanos’ arrival in the MCU. That being said, there’s also no indication that any other hero knows about The Winter Soldier’s involvement in the murder of Iron Man’s parents and how Steve intentionally hid the truth.
When Captain America and Iron Man reconciled years later Captain America: Civil War, the two didn’t go into detail about their conflict — whether it was over the Sokovia or Bucky Accords. Instead, there was just an understanding that they both wanted to move on and focus on undoing Thanos’ snap. So despite the dominance of Captain America homages in Ms. Marvel‘s Avengers Con, chances are Iron Man has no hard feelings about it. After all, he has already received worldwide accolades after his sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame as seen in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Ms. Marvel airs new episodes Wednesdays on Disney+.
