OLDHAM Athletic have signed promotion-winning Stockport County captain Liam Hogan to a two-year deal.
The 33-year-old was released at the end of last season after sealing the Hatters’ return to the English Football League.
And Latics head coach John Sheridan hopes Hogan can make back-to-back promotions with Oldham looking to lift themselves from the National League at the first attempt.
“Liam is a great defender, a clear winner, and his experience in the National League will be a huge asset for us in the coming season,” Sheridan said of his first summer signing.
“It is essential that we build a team around players who have succeeded at the level we are going to.
“Liam ticks all of those boxes, including a number of seasons in the EFL, and having him become our first signing shows how much I wanted to secure his services.
“I’m really happy to have secured the services of a player who has had real success in the division we will be playing in next season.”
The 33-year-old defender’s professional career spans over a decade with seven clubs, joining Latics straight from a second National League promotion with Stockport County last season.
Hogan played more than 80 times at Edgeley Park over a two-and-a-half-year period and captained the side that were crowned National League champions, securing automatic promotion to the Football League on the final day of countryside.
A centre-back by trade who can also play at full-back, Hogan began his non-league career with Halifax, winning two promotions as the club progressed through the divisions.
He played over 100 games over three years at Shay before earning a move that earned him a move to the EFL with Fleetwood, also spending time on loan at Macclesfield.
Hogan then spent a season at Tranmere before a distinguished stint at Salford, leading his hometown club to double promotion, including success in the National League North before leading the Ammies to a historic rise in League football in 2019.
Hogan made over 100 appearances at Moor Lane before joining Stockport in February 2020, where he again received the armbar.
Hogan will officially join Latics on July 1 once his Stockport contract expires. His team number has yet to be announced.
