Open letter from the wife of the retired captain of the ORPD

It is with immense pride that I announce the retirement of Capt. Mike Uher, from the Oak Ridge Police Department on June 30, 2022. As a wife of 38 years, I would like to publicly thank him as well as his remarkable achievements.

Mike spent 36 years in law enforcement, including six years in Illinois before serving an additional 30 years for the City of Oak Ridge. For 36 years, he woke up every day and served, protected, mentored and touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with.

Mike comes from a police family where his father served for 30 years in Cicero, Illinois. Mike began his career in 1986 with the Crystal Lake Police Department in Illinois. There, he was a member of the North Central Narcotics Task Force and worked three years as an undercover agent in and around the city of Chicago.

After moving his family to Tennessee, he joined the Oak Ridge Police Department in 1991, where he continued his efforts in criminal investigation and narcotics enforcement. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1993 and then Lieutenant in 1998. In 2008 Mike was promoted to his current rank of Captain.

This retirement is bittersweet for Mike as he says goodbye to much of more than half of his life. Retirement is the end of something great, but also the beginning of something even better! Mike, my love, you wore your uniform and insignia with pride, and as you retire you can remember your service with honor. You have safely reached the finish line! Your father smiles at you, as does your heavenly father, and together they say, “Bravo, good and faithful servant. (Matthew 25:21)

It is with immense love and pride that I say, “Michael, your tour of duty is over. You are officially 10:7!

Mike Uher has been married for 36 years to his wife, Linda, who wrote him this letter upon retirement.

I love you forever,

Linda Uher
