Outspoken broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has been hit with a double whammy of separate libel suits.
Captain Smart is accused of making corruption-related remarks deemed defamatory by two individuals named by Nana Akufo-Addo – Paul Adom Otchere and Francis Asenso-Boakye.
The media organization Captain Smart works for, Media General Ghana Limited, is also attached.

Details of Paul Adom-Otchère’s defamation lawsuit
Paul Adom-Otchere, broadcaster and Chairman of the Board of Ghana Airports Company, is seeking GH¢10 million and other things to compensate him for damage to his reputation following alleged comments made against him by Captain Smart on Onua FM/TV.

The host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV claims that on August 26, 2022, Captain Smart made defamatory comments against him and called him a corrupt journalist.
Mr Adom-Otchere says the comments tarnished his image and tarnished his reputation in the eyes of well-meaning people in society.
The High Court complaint further alleged that Captain Smart’s disparaging remarks made him appear contemptible in front of his peers and other right-thinking people.
He wants the court to award “damages in the amount of 10 million Ghanaian cedis for the defamatory remarks made by the 1st defendant on Onua TV and Onua FM”.

He also wants the court to award him “compensatory damages for damage to his reputation and aggravated damages for the reckless and malicious publication of the defamatory comments.”
He also begs the court to force Captain Smart and his media organization to recant and apologize for the comments.
Details of Asenso-Boakye’s libel lawsuit
In a similar lawsuit, Public Works and Housing Minister Francis Asenso-Boakye wants the court to punish Captain Smart for alleging that while he was chief of staff he blocked the transfer of staff from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
Lawyers for the Bantama MP claimed to have written to demand an apology and recantation from Captain Smart, but stood their ground and did not.
He is also asking for GH¢10 million in compensation for the damage caused to his reputation.
