Penguins re-sign Wilkes-Barre/Scranton captain Taylor Fedun

The Penguins re-signed a veteran right-handed defenseman to a contract extension on Wednesday.

Taylor Fedun, who captained the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the 2021-22 season, has been re-signed to a two-year, two-way deal through the 2023-24 campaign.

The deal will carry a salary cap of $762,500.

Fedun (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) joined the Penguins last offseason when he signed a one-year, two-way contract with a salary cap of $750,000.

Aside from a brief seven-day recall to the NHL roster in early November that ended in a healthy three-game retirement, Fedun has spent the entire season at the American Hockey League (AHL) level. with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. In 44 AHL games, the 33-year-old has scored 15 points (five goals, 11 assists).

An undisclosed injury sidelined Fedun for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s final 26 games of the season as well as that team’s six postseason games.

Having overcoming a fractured femur he suffered in a pre-season game in 2011Fedun carved out a 10-year career in the professional ranks that included stops with the Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Buffalo Sabers and Dallas Stars.

With Fedun signed, the Penguins have 10 remaining players who are expected to become unrestricted free agents on July 13:

Attackers —Anthony Angello, Brian Boyle, Michael Chaput, Evgeni Malkin, Rickard Rakell, Evan Rodrigues

Defenders —Nathan Beaulieu, Kris Letang

Goalkeepers —Casey DeSmith, Louis Domingo
