Captain RCB IPL 2022: Faf du Plessis named new captain RCB – The Royal Challengers Bangalore are all set to appoint Faf du Plessis as the new captain for the IPL 2022. The RCB has called a press conference on March 12 at 4pm for the same. With Virat Kohli stepping down as captain after IPL 2021, the post remained vacant. While RCB was ready to announce the name on March 8, they have now decided to delay the announcement. They will have the announcement at the new RCB Bar & Cafe at 4 p.m. At the same event, RCB will also launch the jersey.

What happened against Glenn Maxwell was his unavailability in the first three matches of IPL 2022. Although he was not named in the white ball series against Pakistan, Cricket Australia banned all players under central contract to participate in the IPL until April 5th, which means that the NOC will only be applicable from April 6th.

This meant that Faf du Plessis had gotten the green light. The former South African skipper has extensive captaincy experience having captained the team in all three formats, including the World Cup. At Chennai Super Kings, Du Plessis was a guaranteed starter and he will have his place sealed in RCB’s Playing XI as an opener, opening the door to take charge.

Captain RCB IPL 2022: Why does Faf du Plessis seem the ideal choice for the captaincy of the RCB?

  • Faf is the only option after Virat Kohli with experience as a captain in international cricket.
  • A prolific opener in form, Faf du Plessis will be one of the first on the scoresheet.
  • Having retired from international cricket, he will also be available for the duration of IPL 2022.
  • The other option was Glenn Maxwell who was considered initially but he will be unavailable for the first few games. The Australian will only be available from March 12 after serving a five-day quarantine following the Pakistan tour.
  • Dinesh Karthik was the other option, especially due to his entries behind the stumps. But under his guidance, KKR struggled and he quit midway through the season in IPL 2020.
