Report: Cardiff target Tottenham striker Kion Etete

Everyone knows who the best talents coming out of Tottenham Hotspur’s academy are right now. Troy Parrott and Dane Scarlett are perhaps the club’s two best-known young strikers, with Alfie Devine and Harvey White also winning as potential future stars.

But we haven’t heard much about Kion Etete, and that’s probably just because he’s on a lower level than the aforementioned players. Etete, 20, was not brought on Tottenham’s pre-season tour of South Korea, and he was not seen at all in pre-season. That probably suggests he’s not in Antonio Conte’s plans.

In line with this, there is a new Etete transfer rumor in WalesOnline which suggests Etete is now a Cardiff City target. Cardiff are looking to strengthen their attacking options in the Championship next season and see Etete an opportunity to do so.

Etete is… well, it’s a unit. He is 6’4” with an excellent Premier League 2 goalscoring record and is also good in the air. He has just finished a season where he had two good loans in two different divisions – to League Two from Northampton Town and in a division with Cheltenham. In total, he registered six goals and three assists in 1,900 minutes of action, which isn’t exactly prolific, but certainly a decent comeback for a young striker on his first loan outings.

If Cardiff pursues him for a permanent signing, Spurs shouldn’t expect a ton of money for him from the Bluebirds. WalesOnline say Cardiff have already made a remarkable 13 signings this summer, all on free transfers, but suggest they would be willing to pay for the right player; Etete could be that player. But the report also suggests there are a number of other Championship clubs interested in Kion. His contract expires at the end of the upcoming season, so it’s time for Spurs to cash in if they want the money for him.

Kion didn’t have the buzz coming out of the academy that his contemporaries had, but he has physical tools that a lot of other strikers don’t have, so finishing off a championship-level striker is pretty awesome. If he is able to stay in the second division, it is not excluded that he could one day end up in the Premier League with a promoted team. We’ll see what happens with Cardiff’s interest, or if he’s able to turn that interest into some sort of move this summer.
