Rosner Wrap: Preseason Standouts, Captain Jack, Couturier Update

Hello and happy Thursday. The New York Islanders were out Wednesday after back-to-back 4-1 preseason losses. It is expected that cuts have been made to the training camp roster and there will be one less group on the ice on Thursday, after having had a rotation of three groups in the first week from training camp.

Here are your New York Islanders and NHL stories to know for today:

JNI Hockey now: While the preseason doesn’t mean much, with a handful of players in the games that won’t be in the NHL in 2022-23, these games show us which players look ready for NHL action, which players need further development and some areas of the New York Islanders need to be the focus of practices ahead of opening night Oct. 13. JNI Hockey now: The New York Islanders suffered their second straight preseason loss by a score of 4-1 as they fell to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. While many Islanders didn’t show much in the contest, two youngsters were more than remarkable, for good reason, in 19-year-old Aatu Räty and 20-year-old William Dufour. New York Islanders.

JNI Hockey now: Robin Salo, 23, skated with Scott Mayfield throughout training camp and in the first preseason game, where he scored a goal and played well. Has Salo solidified himself as Mayfield’s partner yet? New York Islanders.

Philly Hockey now: Philadelphia Flyers top center Sean Couturier will not need surgery, general manager Chuck Fletcher said Wednesday. There is no timetable for his return and Fletcher did not answer any questions from reporters. Philadelphia Flyers.

Washington Hockey now: Making their Washington Capitals debut on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Flyers, Connor Brown and Dylan Strome didn’t disappoint, getting on the scoresheet quickly. Look here. Capitals of Washington.

Florida Hockey Now: On Tuesday, the Florida Panthers signed 21-year-old goaltender Spencer Knight to a three-year, $13.5 million contract extension. The contract will hold an annual cap of $4.5 million once it kicks in next season. Florida Panthers.

Montreal Hockey Now: A young Montreal Canadiens roster took to the ice at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday night, losing a 3-0 decision to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Here are the highlights of the loss. Montreal Canadiens.

Vegas Hockey now: The Colorado Avalanche eliminated only two NHL regulars when they faced the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night; Logan O’Connor and Alexander Georgiev. With veterans William Karlsson, Zach Whitecloud and Chandler Stephenson in the roster, the Golden Knights took care of business and won 7-1 for their first preseason win of the season. Vancouver Hockey now: Thinking back to Canucks head coach Bruce Boudreau’s version of a “skate bag” on Tuesday, one can establish a fun little pecking order for Vancouver’s fitness. Calgary Hockey Now: It was a far cry from the Battle of Alberta we saw in the spring. No Connor McDavid, Leon Draisatl, Evander Kane… well, no Edmonton Oilers stars at all. But the Calgary Flames froze a heavy roster in the regular season, and there were enough entertaining moments to make Game 4 of the preseason schedule worthwhile. Calgary Flames.
