New Delhi: Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals have paid rich tributes to legendary cricketer Shane Warne, who died aged 52 on Friday. Warne was the first captain of the Rajasthan Royals and led them to the IPL title in 2008.

Warne joined the Royals team in 2008 after leaving international cricket. Despite being written off as title contenders, the Royals, who had no big names on their roster, won the inaugural edition of the IPL under Warne’s stewardship.

The Royals fought their way to the playoffs, finishing first in the points table and eventually winning the first IPL trophy.

Taking to Twitter, the IPL franchise wrote an emotional message.

“Shane Warne: The name means magic. Our first Royal; a man who made us believe that the impossible is only a myth. A leader who walked, spoke and turned underdogs into champions.

“A mentor who turned everything he touched into gold. We don’t have the words to express how we really feel right now, but what we do know is that the world is poorer today today, because he will now exist without his smile, his radiance and his attitude to live life to the fullest.. We are heartbroken, as are millions of cricket fans around the world.

“Warnie, you will forever be our Captain, Chief, Royal. Rest in peace, legend.

Earlier, actor and former co-owner of IPL team Rajasthan Royals, Shilpa Shetty paid tribute to Warne. On her Instagram handle, Shilpa shared two photos with the iconic Australian cricketer and wrote, “The captions continue.”
