It seems that Samuel L. Jackson is still a little upset that Nick Fury is not present Captain America: Civil War.
Jackson spoke with fellow MCU artists Oscar Isaac, Michael Keaton, and Tom Hiddleston, among others, to The Hollywood Reporterround table of actors. The conversation eventually turned into a discussion of regrets and paths not taken. And for Jackson, he still believes his Marvel mainstay should have weighed in on Cap and Iron Man’s battle.
“A low moment for you is a positive moment. But all of those things are there and you have the opportunity to do that, and they give you that leeway to work your way through it,” Jackson said. “Once they see you and know who you are, it gives everyone the opportunity to come and bring personality. That was the thing with the avengers movies, they all had different personalities, and they were able to blossom once the initial movie was over. The initial film was to introduce these people to who they are and what they can do. Now that’s how they interact and they’re not all nice. And I teased them, I teased them again, about Civil war because I’m like, ‘How could the kids have a fight and Nick Fury doesn’t show up?’ Like, ‘What’s going on here? Everyone go to your room. But they didn’t need me for that. They did, but they didn’t.”
Whereas Avengers: Age of Ultron and the following films did not specify the role that SHIELD plays in the MCU after the fallout of Captain America: The Winter Soldierit’s certainly unusual that Fury didn’t show up when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes meet. Luckily for Jackson, he’s had plenty of opportunities since to play the character. Fury played an important role in Captain Marvelplayed a dual role in Spider-Man: Far From Homeand even appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Outside of movies, he’ll have his first starring role in the MCU when Secret Invasion hits the streaming service. And Fury might also have a new secret organization. Still, Jackson isn’t wrong to feel confused about his Civil war absence, and he is not alone. Chris Hemsworth Thought He Was Fired From The MCU When Thor Wasn’t There Civil war.
Of course, Jackson probably isn’t going anywhere. In fact, he recently revealed why he had to keep playing Fury. “He’s a guy who doesn’t have superpowers, who’s in charge of people who have superpowers, and they let him,” Jackson said of Fury. “That’s something special about him. He’s a very different leader of men, in another way. It’s very satisfying to be part of a world that I’ve admired for so long when I was a child.”
