Members of the public are now informed that bus captains also function as human calculators when it comes to counting fares deposited in coin boxes.

A video uploaded to TikTok by @yourbuscaptain revealed that the piggy bank on buses doesn’t automatically count money.

The TikToker first explained the device that calculates the fare based on the passenger, whether adult, senior or student.

He then moved the camera to the cash box and dropped a Singaporean 2 dollar bill. “It’s easy for me if you put in bills or larger amounts of coins,” YourBusCaptain said.

The use of the piggy bank’s large transparent window was then explained as loose change deposited piled up near the window, allowing the bus captain to start counting.

By pressing a button, the money is transferred underneath.

A netizen admitted “to having wasted his whole life changing notes into coins just to be able to get on the bus”. More than 350 other TikTok users seem to agree.

“Easier to put in a note and some coins if it’s more than S$2, bro,” YourBusCaptain advised.

Meanwhile, the video proved beneficial by confirming that paper invoices could be deposited in coin boxes.

“I didn’t even know I could put notes,” one TikTok user admitted in a comment with over 1,080 likes.

Others raised concerns about counting errors. “Are you penalized if the physical amount does not match the consolidated receipts? asked TikTok user @YazidSallim.

“What happens if there is a shortfall? Hope you don’t have to pay for it. SMRT must implement the auto-count coin box! added another user.

As for the miscalculations, others admitted that they would be under the required fare as students, but the bus captain would still give them a ticket.

“So the captain of the bus could see how much I put in all this time?” All the uncles must have been so nice to me when I was younger,” one netizen said./TISG
