Bus captain shows how coin box works and says it doesn’t count money automatically

Bus captains have a long list of responsibilities in addition to transporting passengers safely from stop to stop.

But a little-known fact is that they are also lightning-fast calculators, as demonstrated by a bus captain and TikTok user, who recently explained how the bus piggy bank works.

Contrary to popular belief, he revealed that there were no automatic functions in the piggy bank and that every time a passenger paid for a bus ride, the bus captain had to count the money manually.

He added that he prefers passengers depositing notes rather than coins, as it makes their job of counting easier.

The bus captain shows behind the scenes of the coin box interface

On Friday, August 12, resident bus captain and TikTok user @yourbuscaptain shared how the coin box works inside each bus.

He begins the minute-long clip by pointing out that these coin boxes don’t automatically count the money commuters put in them every time they pay for a ride.

Giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look, he then pointed out the various buttons on the bus fare system interface.

The interface has different buttons for different fare types, such as adult, senior, or student.

Next, he directs the camera to the familiar yellow coin box by his side, which features a transparent panel.

He explains that the box is nothing fancy and has no technology that would automatically count the money.

Illustrating his point, he coughed up S$2.90 for the small experiment and dropped a two dollar bill into the box.

The two dollar bill then falls inside without much fanfare and is visible through the panel.

He then shared that he preferred dollar bills and large denominations of coins because it was easier for him to count the appropriate fare.

In comparison, he showed what it would look like if a commuter decided to insert smaller denomination coins.

Naturally, he would have to count each piece to make sure it was at the right price. And that would take time, he explains.

As he ends the video, he hopes commuters will take note of the information he shared and “help” make each other and the bus captains happy.

The EZ-Link card is probably still the best

For so long, we fumbled with our wallets for the right amount, not knowing that a ticket would do.

However, the downside is that we probably won’t get our change back.

No matter how you talk about your fare, we doubt it’s as convenient as typing with an EZ-Link card.
