Stoke City captain Joe Allen triggers ’12-club chase’ as Swansea urged to act

Swansea City are said to be just one of 12 clubs hoping to sign Joe Allen.

Allen, 32, is nearing the end of his contract at Stoke City and has been in talks with the club over an extension after joining Liverpool six years ago. Swansea, who finished 15th and one place behind Stoke in the Championship, have made public their interest in bringing him back to South Wales.

It is understood there are suitors at home and abroad, including in Spain, and WalesOnline claim up to a dozen have shown interest.

Allen’s pal and former Wales team-mate Owain Tudur Jones has urged Swansea not to miss their chance, telling Radio Cymru: “Swansea are going to be lucky to have Joe, potentially on a quarter of his salary , and he is happy to do so. So if the club decides to say, ‘No, we’re not going to give it the green light’, well, go for it.

“That’s more than Joe can actually do on the court. He’s not the most passionate in terms of his speech and bringing out the best in people that way is more about how he carries himself, how he talks to people personally.

“But it’s more than that too because of the feeling around the club, they’ll sell shirts. They’re going to miss a huge opportunity if they don’t act on that.”

Allen has made 51 appearances for club and country this season after recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon.

He’s heading into a big summer on several fronts, with a World Cup qualifying play-off against Scotland or Ukraine next month in hopes of helping Wales reach the final for the first time since 1958.
