Barcelona captain Gerard Pique attempted to acquire Barca Studios’ 24.5% share last summer when the club put him up for sale to boost their funds.
This statement comes from the journalist Joan Fonteswhich states that the veteran defender asked chairman Joan Laporta if he could buy the share that had been made available as part of the club’s plan to activate the economic levers.
However, the Barcelona president told the 35-year-old centre-half that it wasn’t a good idea as it would be against the code of ethics. However, that didn’t sit well with Pique who was reportedly unhappy with the conversations.
Previous reports have even indicated that this could have been a reason why the veteran superstar’s negotiations to cut his salary fell through.
It’s no secret that Barcelona entered the summer market in a precarious financial situation and had to rely on the so-called ‘economic levers’ to bail them out.
The first two levers saw them sell 25% of their TV rights, before parting with a 24.5% stake in Barca Studios, selling it to Socios.com.
The Blaugrana sanctioned the sale of another 24.5% stake in Barca Studios to a company named Orpheus Media, run by Jaume Roures in August after Laporta denied Pique the chance to buy it himself.
