Toronto Maple Leafs trade for Kraken captain Mark Giordano

The Toronto Maple Leafs finally got in on the trade deadline action.

With less than 24 hours to go before the trade deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded for Mark Giordano.

Mark Giordano captained the Calgary Flames and Seattle Kraken, and hails from Toronto. Gio brings experience and stability to a Toronto defense that needs such presence, especially in net.

We haven’t seen the trade details yet, but you have to understand the Kraken keep half of Giordano’s salary, otherwise I don’t know how the Leafs make it work with a 6.75 cap. millions of dollars.

Toronto Maple Leafs and Mark Giordano

Sportnet’s Ryan Leslie was the first to break the news.

I’m not sure exactly where Sheldon Keefe will put Giordano, but pairing him with Brodie seems like a fun option, as the two played together in Calgary.

It’s a decision that almost makes too much sense.

If you’re worried about Giordano’s downfall in his attacking game, I can allay your fears a bit. Giordano has a little more work in Toronto than in Seattle. The first pass on a breakout from Giordano’s stick should be fun to watch when it might land on Auston Matthews’ or Mitch Marner’s stick.

Kyle Dubas still has some work to do with the roster, but after the Lyubushkin trade, I think Giordano completes the backend for Toronto this season. Giordano is on an expiring contract and is a rental player.

It will be interesting to see how the Leafs establish their defensive pairings going forward, and how even more so when Jake Muzzin returns, assuming he does indeed return.

Keep an eye out for the Toronto Maple Leafs. I don’t think they’re done trading yet. Looking at the moves Florida, Tampa and Boston all made, a big splash was almost imminent.

I don’t want Kyle Dubas moving like his job depends on it. I highly doubt he moved any in this deal, but I’m strongly against trading top prospects for one-year rentals like Mark Giordano. If he moved a few picks and Dermott for Mark Giordano, I’m more than okay with that.

Like I said, keep an eye out. There is plenty of time left before the deadline. We will have more as trade details become available.
