The Edward T. and Sarah Laurent Kassinger Scholarship Board has awarded the 2022 Kassinger Scholarships to Captain Derrick Gregory and Officer Travis George of the University of Georgia Police Department in recognition of their academic achievements and their professional activities.

Steve Harris, recently retired director of UGA’s Office of Emergency Preparedness, presented the awards to Gregory and George on behalf of the Kassinger Scholarship Board.

The scholarship is available to graduate and undergraduate students earning college degrees while employed full-time as a UGA police officer or as a student working in the criminal justice degree program from UGA. The award is named after Edward Kassinger, director of the UGA’s Public Safety Division from 1969 to 1983, and his late wife, Sarah. The award was created in 1984 by former employees and friends of the Kassingers who believe that students who work to help pay for education should be recognized.

Gregory has been employed by the university’s police department since January 2000. In December 2021, Gregory earned a master’s degree in public safety administration from Columbus State University.

George has been employed by the University Police Department since September 2020. In May 2022, George graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Georgia.

The Kassinger Scholarship is awarded annually to applicants and is administered by UGA’s Office of Civil Protection.
