Fly-half Dan Biggar isn’t looking for much to change for him after being named Wales captain for the 2022 Six Nations campaign.
Wales will look to defend their crown under Biggar in the absence of injured Alun Wyn Jones, who was one of the most notable absentees from coach Wayne Pivac’s squad.
proud moment
Biggar will lead his country for the first time in his 96th Test as the Welsh side look to get their title defense off to a strong start against Ireland on February 5.
“I was really delighted Wayne called me on Sunday night and offered him (captain) to me,” Biggar told the Welsh Rugby Union official website.
“I’m really proud, but I tried not to think about it too much in that way.
“The first thing I said to Wayne when I agreed was that I didn’t want it to change who I am as a player, and Wayne was totally okay with that as well.
“I didn’t want it to become all about me, or change me as a person with guys or anything like that.”
Wales’ Six Nations group – the one that includes three uncapped players in Dewi Lake, Jac Morgan and James Ratti – will meet next Monday.
And Biggar added: “The first week will be all about drip feeding information and getting the boys up to speed.
“I think even more for us as a team because of the situation we’ve had with a lot of boys not playing – Covid, injuries, things like that – and new faces in the team, he’s important that we get up speed fairly quickly.
“Traditionally we’ve started quite slowly in the tournament and there’s not really room for that with an away game first and then a very tough game against an improving Scottish side.
“Obviously we’ve lost a lot of caps and experience to the guys who are missing.
“But it presents an opportunity for young boys or other boys to show leadership qualities, show enthusiasm and really pull together for the team.”
