Western Sydney Wanderers captain Rhys Williams’ A-League Men’s season appears to be over with scans confirming the severity of a hamstring injury sustained over the weekend.

The seasoned defender collapsed in agony before being whisked off the field on a stretcher in the 78th minute of Sunday’s 3-3 draw against Melbourne City at AAMI Park.

Scans have since confirmed a ruptured hamstring tendon in Williams, an injury that typically takes at least three months to heal. Williams, a 14-international veteran who had not given up hope of returning by force to Graham Arnold’s Socceroos plans for the 2022 World Cup, will have to undergo surgery to repair the tendon.

It’s a setback for the former Middlesbrough and Melbourne Victory player who has had a long history of injury issues during his career, which cost him a berth at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The news is the last thing the Wanderers needed as the pressure continues to build on coach Carl Robinson.

The Rouge et Noir have won just one of their six league games this season and sit eighth in the standings.

Western Sydney will not be in for the action this weekend after their match with Victory at Commbank Stadium was postponed after three positive cases of COVID-19 with the Melbourne club squad earlier in the week.
