Thanos’ sword in Avengers: Endgame is more than a match for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The sword is powerful enough to destroy Cap’s vibranium shield.
In Avengers: Endgame Thanos takes on the Avengers in Battle for Earth, destroying Captain America’s vibranium shield with his double-edged sword. Although vibranium is susceptible to damage, it is described as the most durable material in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That Thanos has enough power to beak vibranium is a testament to the strength of the Mad Titan, but more importantly, the weapon itself.
Although the origin of the sword is unknown, the obvious strength and qualities of the blade reveal clues to its composition. As described in Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos conscripts the Dwarf King Eitri to craft the Infinity Gauntlet on Nidavellir. One of the Nine Realms, Nidavellir is a neutron star that serves as the home of the Dwarves and the genesis of Uru, a metal ore unique to the realm. Thanos’ Mjolnir, Stormbreaker, and Infinity Gauntlet are all forged from Uru. A stone-like ore with apparent metallic properties, uru could also be imbued with magical energies.
Although the sword could be made from Uru, it does not appear to have been fashioned by the Dwarves of Nidavellir. After acquiring Eitri’s gauntlet, Thanos no longer needs the Dwarves, slaughtering them and leaving only Eitri and a dying star in his wake. This would indicate that Thanos was looking for other ways to make his sword. The artifact could be a design of the same ilk as the weapon introduced in Thor: Love and Thunder, the Necrosword wielded by Gorr the Butcher God. Or, it could even have been designed by the Celestials. Both scenarios would lend credence to the perceptible strength of Thanos’ sword. The Mad Titan not only damaged the shield, he destroyed it.
How powerful is Thanos’ sword compared to other MCU weapons?
Thanos is described as one of the most powerful villains in the MCU. However, without the sword, Thanos is vulnerable. In Infinity War, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy nearly subdued Thanos on planet Titan. Once equipped with the new blade in End of Game however, Thanos is nearly unbeatable. The sword allows for versatility in both defense and attack. The weapon’s double-sided blade allows it to easily parry at close range, while the center hilt allows for spinning strikes at longer range. He dispatches Iron Man and Thor with relative ease, before defeating Captain America (while wielding the shield and Mjolnir). The sword is resistant to repulsor blasts, summoned lightning bolts from Mjolnir, and blows from Stormbreaker. The vigorous and sturdy composition of Thanos’ sword could be cosmic in nature, derived from the Celestials. Beings known to have the ability to mold matter itself, it’s plausible that the Celestials craft a tool capable of beating the best of the Nine Realms, even Uru and Vibranium.
Thor: Love and Thunder introduces All-Black, another fearsome weapon with the power to slay gods. The Necrosword was once the property of Knull, the god of the Symbiotes. The blade also granted its wielder the ability to conjure objects, weapons, and ghouls shrouded in darkness. Given All-Black’s abilities, it would be compelling to see how the weapon would fare in a duel against Thanos’ double-edged sword. With Gorr the Butcher God defeated and the Necrosword now reforged into Mjolnir (thanks to Dr. Jane Foster), that duel is unlikely to happen.
Despite the damage done by Thanos’ blade in Avengers: Endgame, the most dynamic weapons of the franchise remain intact. Thor is about to return, presumably with Mjolnir and Stormbreaker. Cap’s new shield will return to center stage Captain America: New World Order. Additionally, with the return of vibranium-filled Wakanda in Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverit’s possible the Avengers villain in MCU Phase 5 and beyond still needs a weapon that can take on even Earth’s mightiest heroes.
