LANSING, Michigan— Senator Dale Zorn Tuesday introduced legislation honoring Monroe Township firefighter Joseph Liedel, who died in the line of duty in 2020.
Liedel died in August 2020 at age 48 from injuries sustained in the line of duty while responding to an emergency the previous month.
“Captain. Liedel followed in his father’s footsteps to become a firefighter – serving and protecting the people of Monroe Charter Township for nearly three decades,” said Zorn, R-Onsted. “He had gained the trust and respect of his colleagues and had become captain. But his service was not limited to Monroe. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he joined some of his fellow Monroe Township firefighters to help out at Ground Zero in New York.
“This action will help us honor the life and courageous service of Captain Liedel and ensure that we will forever remember his dedication to our community.”
Senate Bill 1026 would designate a portion of the M-50 Freeway in Monroe County, from South Raisinville Road to US Highway 24, as the “Captain Joseph M. Liedel Memorial Highway”.
SB 1026 was referred to the Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for review. If the bill becomes law, it will have no tax impact on the state or local government. State law requires private contributions sufficient to fully cover the cost of erecting and maintaining markers displaying the name of a memorial highway.
