As Galactus wields a power even Captain Marvel can’t comprehend, the hero proves to be the opposite of the World Eater in a specific way.
Whereas Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe, his abilities are insignificant compared to the insurmountable power of Galactus-a being older than the Marvel Universe itself. However, Captain Marvel’s powers have a hidden characteristic that can impact an entire planet, much like Galactus himself, but with the exact opposite effect.
Galactus is a being who is more of a force of nature than a definable character as he has been tasked with the task of consuming planets across the universe for the cosmic purpose of keeping life in check while satiating his hunger without end. While he has the power to devour entire worlds, Galactus also has access to a god-level energy source known as Power Cosmic, which makes him virtually unstoppable and all the more terrifying. Captain Marvel also wields immense power in the form of flight, energy absorption, photon blasts, and self-sustainability, to name a few, and these abilities are shared by most other iterations. of Captain Marvel, including its predecessor, Mar-Vell.
In Captain Marvel #33 by Kelly Thompson and Sergio Davila, Captain Marvel is attacked by the villainous Vox Supreme’s brainwashed minions, minions she quickly discovers are her friends and companions ‘Marvels:’ Spectrum, Phyla-Vell and Genis- Vel. Realizing that Vox Supreme means to kidnap and control all Marvels, Captain Marvel flies to the rescue of Ms. Marvel before she too is captured and forced into Vox’s service. Once Ms. Marvel is safe, Captain Marvel decides to fix the problem at its source and tracks down Vox Supreme to a distant world where the villain operates. When she gets there, Captain Marvel shockingly realizes that the planet Vox Supreme has taken for hers is actually the same world where former Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, sacrificed his life for the salvation of the entire universe – and where his body was interred forever.
The planet Mar-Vell died on was originally barren and void of life, but when Captain Marvel revisits that world in this issue, it’s lush and teeming with life. As readers soon learned, the reason the once desolate world is now a garden paradise is because the cosmic energy that surged through Mar-Vell’s body seeped into the planet as his body began to decay, giving him new life with his death. Mar-Vell’s latest act of planetary heroism proves he’s the exact opposite of Galactus, and by extension, Carol Danvers is too as she possesses Mar-Vell’s exact power. While Galactus drains all life from a planet in order to keep himself alive, Captain Marvel can create new life on a planet with their death.
Although Captain Marvel can only grant life to an entire world once, as it requires the ultimate sacrifice, the finality of this particular display of power is one of the main reasons it earns Captain Marvel the title. from “Reverse Galactus”. Galactus devours entire worlds to maintain his eternal life, meaning countless planets are destined to be destroyed in his wake, while Captain Marvel can sacrifice their lives for the rejuvenation of a single planet, proving that Captain Marvel is the exact opposite of Galactus in all respects on a cosmic scale.
