Pixar and Disney recently brought beloved Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear back to the big screen, showing fans around the world another side to the character they first met. toy story. Light year is basically the sci-fi movie that inspired the toy Andy got for his birthday all those years ago. Instead of just a toy, this version is a full action hero, with longtime Captain America star Chris Evans providing his voice.
It turns out that Captain America and hero Buzz Lightyear actually have a lot in common. During a recent episode of the D23 Podcast Inside DisneyEvans spoke about the similarities between his two characters.
“Well, I mean they’re both definitely leaders. They’re both determined, selfless, honest and loyal to their friends,” Evans said. “Buzz strikes me as someone who probably knew that very early in his life, you know, I imagine Buzz was probably the hall monitor and the scout and class president and just always very confident in his life choices . Cap probably took a little longer to figure out his role in life and how to accomplish what he had inside and there was probably more shyness, humility and uncertainty about Cap.”
While Tim Allen voiced the toy version of Buzz Lightyear for decades, the filmmakers behind Pixar’s latest thought the “real” version of the character must sound a little different.
“Because he’s a secondary character in toy story, we were going to try to figure out how to pour him into a main character, but we had to keep some aesthetic, some sensitivity to his lantern-jawed build, but do it in a way that seemed driven by something,” said Lightyear director Angus MacLane told ComicBook.com in an exclusive interview. “That we may have spent more time trying to do otherwise. We found it pretty quickly if you look toy story again, you’re imagining a whole movie [with that Buzz], i.e. the guy who says, “Well, I’m going this way”. Listen, I’m going over there. Oh no, look, monsters! We get tired of it pretty quickly. And so the idea, some of the revelations of how we were able to thread that needle and give it a more rounded character was key to maintaining functionality.”
Light year now playing in theaters.
