Hotel grant goes to Captain Joseph House

PORT ANGELES — A $5,000 grant through Choice Hotels International and the efforts of a Sequim hotel manager will help family members visit the Captain Joseph House in Port Angeles once it opens .

General Manager Yolanda Pompa of the Quality Inn and Suites applied for the competitive grant offered by the hotel’s parent franchise.

“It resonated in my heart because I had two uncles in the military who are gone now,” she said.

“It means a lot to me to give back where it’s needed.”

Betsy Reed Schultz, founder and executive director of the Captain Joseph House Foundation, thanked Pompa, hotel owner Bret Wirta and assistant general manager Kaittlyn Reese for believing in the foundation’s vision.

Schultz spoke about the open house held in March and said home preparation work continues to bring families to 1108 S. Oak St., Port Angeles.

Schultz established the foundation in memory of his son, Captain Joseph William Schultz, commander of the U.S. Army Green Berets Detachment, who died in an IED attack in Afghanistan in 2011.

The facility, which will be unique in the country, will provide respite and retirement for military families who have lost loved ones serving in the U.S. Armed Forces or who have died as a direct result of injuries sustained during that same military service. combat after September 1. 11, 2001.
