Param Vir Chakra award recipient Subedar Major (Honorary Lieutenant) Yogendra Singh Yadav was awarded the rank of honorary captain on Saturday on the eve of the 75th Independence Day.
Yadav was just 19 when he received the country’s highest military honor for his bravery during the Kargil conflict.
No less than 337 serving non-commissioned officers of the Indian army received the title of honorary captain and 1,358 were awarded the rank of honorary lieutenant.
The Indian Army Honorary Commission (Honorary Captain and Honorary Lieutenant) is awarded to Junior Serving Officers (JCOs) on Independence Day and Republic Day during their final year of service in recognition of their service and their exemplary contribution.
The honorary commission award ratio since 1984 is 12: 1000 for honorary lieutenants and proportional vacancies for honorary captains.
Recognizing the contribution of JCOs, the ratio has now been revised to 15: 1000 for Honorary Lieutenants.
“This will provide better opportunities for junior officers to become honorary officers before they retire,” the Indian military said.
