A police captain from George, in the southern Cape, was arrested on Friday March 18 for allegedly tampering with a crime scene.
According to Hawks spokesman Zinzi Hani, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Team arrested the high-ranking officer after the team determined he had removed evidence from the scene.
“A 53-year-old captain stationed at Thembalethu Police Station has removed evidence of a robbery that took place at the Puma petrol station in January.
“It is reported that on the day of the corporate robbery, a shootout ensued between the police and the suspects,” Hani said.

Hani went on to say that the captain is being held and is due to appear for the first time in Thembalethu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, March 21, where he will be charged with subverting the ends of justice.
Meanwhile, officers attached to the Anti-Corruption Unit also arrested a police sergeant and two constables at Lwandle Police Station on charges of bribery and defeating the administration of justice on Thursday March 17.
According to police spokesman FC Van Wyk, it is alleged that officers searched the premises where the dagga was found and asked the suspect to pay a sum of money in order not to be arrested.
“The members took three packs of dagga and left the rest with the suspect. They are due to appear in Strand Magistrates court on Friday,” Van Wyk said.
