Springdale has a new police chief, and he’s a familiar face to borough residents.
Derek Dayoub went from captain to leader this week by a 5-1 council vote with one abstention.
Dayoub replaces George Polnar, who retired in June.
A 20-year law enforcement officer, Dayoub will receive $85,000 a year under a four-year contract, council chairman Mitch Karaica said.
Dayoub earned $33.50 an hour, or nearly $70,000 a year. He had served as acting chief for three years earlier in his term.
“I would like to get our squad back,” Dayoub said when asked about his immediate goals. “I would like to be more involved in the community, like events for children.”
The police department has a vacancy.
Karaica, Brittni Bair, Eileen Miller, Jason Overly and Michael Ziencik voted in favor of the promotion. Shawn Fitzgerald voted against, citing budget concerns. Councilor Antoinette Robbins abstained.
The council also voted to activate the borough’s civil service commission to see if hiring a new police officer will fit into its budget.
Bruno Moretti has been appointed to the Civil Service Commission to fill the unexpired term of Scott Redman. The mandate will expire on December 31, 2028.
The board will also post an advertisement to fill a vacant position on a committee with one or two new members.
