The Vegas Golden Knights traded the former Canadiens captain to the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday along with defenseman Dylan Coghlan in exchange for future considerations.

The Canadiens traded Pacioretty to the Golden Knights on September 10, 2018, in exchange for Nick Suzuki, Tomas Tatar and a second-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft who was later traded to the Los Angeles Kings.

Pacioretty, 33, was limited to 39 games last season due to injury, posting totals of 19-18-37. He has one season left on his four-year, $28 million contract with a $7 million salary cap. Coghlan went 3-10-13 in 59 games last season and has one year left on his contract with a salary cap of $762,500.

The Golden Knights were about $2.5 million over the NHL salary cap before making the trade.

“Adding offensive firepower and improving our power play were priorities this offseason, and Max certainly ticks those boxes,” Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell told the team’s website. “This acquisition gives us an elite goalscorer and another veteran voice in our dressing room.”

It was a busy day for the Hurricanes, who also acquired defenseman Brent Burns from the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks also sent center Lane Pederson to the Hurricanes as part of the deal in exchange for center Steven Lorentz, goaltender Eetu Makiniemi and a conditional third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Burns had totals of 10-44-54 in 82 games for the Sharks last season. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound player won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman for the 2016-17 season with a record of 29-47-76 in 82 games.

Burns, 37, has three more seasons left on his eight-year contract worth US$64 million with an annual salary cap of US$8 million. According to CapFriendly.com, the Hurricanes still have just over $4 million in salary cap space.

“Brent has been an elite offensive defenseman in the NHL for a long time,” Waddell said. “He has produced at a consistent level throughout his career, and we believe his arrival brings us closer to our goal of winning the Stanley Cup. Lane is a young center who helps solidify our depth down the middle.

Pacioretty will join another former Canadian, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, with the Hurricanes.

Kotkaniemi has a new eight-year, US$38.56 million contract that kicks off next season with a salary cap of US$4.82 million.
